Potted History

Salt Ayre, or Scale Hall as it was called then started life as a refuse tip, which was then landscaped in the 1960’s and left to grow. As a knock on from the Morecambe Cycle weekend some members of the Lune RCC, Lancaster CC and Kent Valley RC, got together with some members of the Lancaster City Council to see if it would be possible to put a custom built cycle racing circuit on the site.

The council gave their permission but of course no cash, so with the aid of raffles, dances and any other money making schemes a total of approx £8,000 was raised, and the first “Scale Hall” track was laid, it was approx 1 mile round, and was just that, round. But racing got under way and was quite successful, you have to remember that this was a pretty unique concept, because there was nothing in the country quite like it.

Meanwhile the refuse tip was spreading towards Morecambe, and as it got filled in it was landscaped and after a while the local council decided to build a sports centre, which in the 70’s were all the rage so the council approached the local clubs and said if they dug up the existing track to build two soccer pitches on and relaid the track we could have it free and clear, which is the track we have now, which since then has been widened and relaid.

The next step hopefully is to have lighting put in, and towards this end we had all the cable and ducting put in when the track was relaid, but it is going to cost and we are at the moment starting what could be long drawn out negotiations with the local council.
